Hope for the Heart
“The Lord your God is in your midst, a Mighty One who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by His love; He will exult over you with loud singing.”
Zephaniah 3:17 ESV
I look outside my kitchen window to see thick clouds filling the sky. Rain splatters on the deck and the gusty wind blows the barren limbs on the trees in my back yard. The view seems cold and lonely. Today should seem like a gloomy, depressing day to me. I should long for yesterday because it was beautiful with bright sunny skies and warmer temperatures. But actually, it looks so much brighter today than yesterday.
The previous day had been filled with one problem after another. Issues arose with my son’s attitude and then I doubted that I handled the situation properly. I received news that a former patient was very sick and probably only had days to live. Trouble seemed to find me at every corner and only seemed to get worse as the day went on. The sun and air were light but my heart felt heavy. The day was dark and unwelcomed even though the weather beckoned otherwise.
I am reminded of a wonderful verse in Zephaniah saying, “The Lord your God is in your midst, a Mighty One who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you by His love, He will exult over you with loud singing.” The words speak to me as I am reassured God is constantly with me and wants to rescue me from my troubles and despair. He quiets my screaming, hurting heart with His wonderful love and compassion. He rejoices over me, causing me to be joyous, as I am aware of being in His awesome presence. God gives hope I will overcome my present troubles by leaning on Him and letting Him pour His gladness over my soul. He aspires me to possess a bright, sunny heart even when the storm of life is raging and begging to fill me with burdens.
Allow God to make your heart joyous, no matter what circumstance befalls you. Let God help you see hope, as He did for me, even on the gloomy days of life. Relish in knowing the Mighty One is persistently with you, helping you overcome your troubles. He is the only who can provide lasting joy for your tender soul.
