Hope is seeing the future through the lens of faith, as understanding is seeing the past through that same lens. In other words, hope is faith turned in the direction of the future, and understanding is faith turned in the direction of the past.

Dread is seeing the future through the lens of doubt, as regret is seeing the past through that same lens. In other words, dread is doubt turned in the direction of the future, and regret is doubt turned in the direction of the past.

Every hopeful sense or intuition about the future is but a ray of light and warmth distilled into our present experience, reflected by and emanating from that huge and blessed hope, the sure return of our Lord Jesus Christ.
