Notice how the scripture says of the great champion Samson that he only “will begin to save Israel from the power of the Philistines.” (Judges chapter 13, verse 5) Reminds me of what Luke wrote of the Lord Jesus in the continuation of his gospel, the first chapter of Acts, verse one; “I wrote the first narrative, (the gospel of Luke) Theophilus (literally “loved on by God’) about all that Jesus began to do and teach until the day he was taken up, after He had given orders (military term) through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen.

Samson, whether he knew it or not, was only establishing some momentum in the deliverance of Israel that other deliverers would build upon later. Jesus too was handing off a kind of “momentum” to his apostles. He had done what they couldn’t do, He as the spotless Lamb of God had purchased redemption and defeated death, but they and we were to continue doing and teaching in His name and power that which He gave and gives us to do and teach. Really, it is Jesus Himself, still doing and teaching today, but through us!

Jesus had “gotten the ball rolling” so to speak and, something none of us could have ever done, and, as his disciples, we are to keep the ball rolling. We didn’t have to generate the momentum, and we don’t even have to maintain it apart from his strength. In fact it can never be maintained apart from his supernatural strength. The law of inertia applies in the spiritual realm as well; that an object in motion (in this case His kingdom) tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an equal and opposing force. And though there be many opposing forces, where is there ever to be found an equal one?!
