Environment—It’s Importance In Child Development
© 2015

by

Stephen A. Peterson

More than 50 years of empirical studies and research of human biology and genetics have demonstrated that children inherit their physical and mental traits and potential for some of their aptitude. The results generated an important question: “Will these traits and possibilities develop to their maximum?” Researchers found that this will depend to a large extent upon the sort of environment a child grows up in during her/his formative years of life.

For example: a child found to possess a higher than normal intelligence quotient (I.Q.) may develop into an adult with an average intellectual ability or functioning. This is likely to occur if the child grows up in an environment that offers little opportunity for development of her or his innate intelligence. Likewise, poor nutrition, lack of exercise, fresh air, sunlight and a lack of parental/caregiver interaction and communication as well as social interaction and communication with others have been found to stunt the growth of affected children. A lack of social interaction and communication may distort some a child’s physical traits, such as their stature, brain development, teeth, skin, and skeletal structure.

Contrary to popular belief among some, personality is not inherited. Adolescent and adult personality has been found a product of a person’s training, parenting style, interaction with people, places and things and all of the factors of their environment that begins at the moment of a child’s birth. Just what forms a person’s personality has been found dependent upon their physical condition, their intelligence, their special abilities (or disabilities) he/she has inherited and their perception of what they have learned in their environment or environments he or she is and has lived in and their influence.
