Never Be Concerned About Having The Last Word
© 2015

by

Stephen A. Peterson

A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calls for blows. A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

Proverbs 18:6-7 (NIV)

Having the last word does not mean you have won the discussion. Any individual with the tallest stature and the least cognitive abilities can have the final say. Greatness is not in the last word, but in the wisest word. And the wisest word is generally no word—silence. In most instances, a person is seldom harmed by what he or she does not say. One will find when a person walks away more is accomplished than not.

When peace is threatened, it is decisively useful to draw on one’s self-control and say nothing than to draw on one’s vocabulary and say something that adds nothing. An intelligent and smart thinker knows when to speak and when not to do so. He or she who keeps her or his tongue usually keeps the peace—and friends!

Prayer:

Almighty Father, I ask that You help me control what I talk about and what I say. At times, when I am angry or desire to dominate conversations, I want to get the last word in without thinking about the affect my words may have on others. I ask forgiveness for the things I say and help from Holy Spirit in controlling my tongue to bring glory and honor to Your name, and set an example for others to follow. I ask these things in the Most Holy Name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
