Family
As Jeremiah had said, he fell asleep as he listened to Charles's soft snoring. Charles and his family were sound asleep when their back door downstairs opened. Charles, Angie, and Jeremiah were startled and sat right up. "Charles, it sounds like there's someone in here," Angie whispered, frightened.
"I know, darling," Charles said, caressing her cheek with his hand. "I'll go downstairs and take care of it." He went into the master closet and grabbed a baseball bat.
"If it's a ghost or a monster, I'll fight him, too!" Jeremiah declared, standing up on the bed. "Daddy, I'll come with you!"
"Shh!" Charles hissed sternly. "You are not to go anywhere, son. You stay right here with your mom. I'll be right back." Angie put her arms around Jeremiah and held him protectively. Charles walked carefully downstairs, watching and listening to see if anyone was nearby. He heard a sound coming from the kitchen, and he went into the kitchen and turned on the light.
To his horror he found a tall, muscular man all dressed in black, wearing a black mask that covered his whole face except for his eyes, stealing plates! When he saw Charles, he ran out the kitchen door. Charles chased him through the door and out to the front yard. When he got close enough to him, he hit the man in the head with his baseball bat. The man, unfazed by the blow, spun around and threw Charles onto the ground. He grabbed Charles's baseball bat and hit Charles in the ribs, breaking about two of his ribs. After that, he punched Charles in the face, making his nose and upper lip bleed and bruising his eyes very badly. Neighbors heard the commotion and started turning on their lights. When the burglar saw this, he ran away. Neighbors ran over to help Charles. One called an ambulance and told him not to move. Another neighbor went to the door and alerted Angie and Jeremiah, who frantically ran downstairs and out the front door to Charles, who was lying down on the ground and groaning.
"Oh, Charles," Angie whispered, kneeling beside him and holding his hand. She was crying.
"Daddy!" Jeremiah cried, as the tears slid down his face.
Charles took Jeremiah's hand. "I promise I'm going to be all right," he whispered.
Soon after that the ambulance came. The paramedics put Charles on a stretcher and put him into the ambulance, with Angie and Jeremiah in tow.
