If there is one thing we have learned in these past 5+ years, it’s that our God is faithful. We have been in the fire more times than not, yet we have never felt alone. It all started in April 2009. Up to that point we had lived an extremely blessed, worry-free life. The truth is we really never had a deep need to seek out God, it seemed He was always right there with us, ordering our steps, and blessing each step we took. But then I got the news that we were going to be laid off our jobs, and they had no idea how long it would be before we would get called back. After my daughters private school closed down, we had to take a second residence in Byram, about 30 miles away, to get her in good school district. So, we were not only paying our mortgage, we also had an apartment to pay for as well. This really put me in much anxiety, because I just saw no way the we could make it on Janice’s salary, and me on unemployment. We had no savings, but I did have around 10k in retirement built up from my last job. As much as I hated to, I saw no other way, so I cash it out so would would not get behind on bills. After a few weeks it seems painfully obvious we were not getting called back soon. I kept praying for a new job, but it seemed the Heavens were closed. In the first time in my walk with the Lord, I felt left alone. But, I knew God was there and it had to be me. So about two months into my layoff, I pursued my God daily. I spent hours each day, reading God’s Word, praying to get back into the perfect will of God. This went on for about three months, and finally we got that call to return to work. We had blown threw all my retirement, but we survived, and was never once late on a bill. Jessica had also graduated that May, so as soon as our lease was up that September we moved to our home, and it seemed life was getting back to normal, and the Heavens were once again wide open. But. then in December tragedy really struck. The layoff was difficult, but my sons death was pain like I had even known. But, unlike before, I had been in God’s presence daily, and from the moment we learned of His death, He was right there with me; holding me, comforting me, and giving me the strength to carry on. The night of his death we stayed the night with my parents, and the next morning I asked my dad, “what am I going to do?” I was a walking zombie, in shock and had no clue how I was going to get through it. He told me something that I thought was so cold at the time, but He was exactly right. He said, “you’ve got to pull it together; you have an entire family looking to you for comfort.” I didn’t want to pull it together, and I certainly wasn’t in any position mentally to be comforting anyone. But God was with me, and gave me the strength to do exactly what my dad had said. Janice and Jessica were devastated. They were both so close to Kris, and felt like their hearts had been ripped out. So, from that moment on, God worked through me to comfort and minister to those in pain. Believe me, I got my pain out. This is one time I was grateful I lived in the country. I was able to go out back, where no one but God could hear me, and wail, til the pain had subsided. But each time, I knew Jesus was right there with me; I knew He was feeling my pain, and would be right there to wipe away every tear that fell.
I learned a very valuable lesson during those trying times that has helped me in every battle that has followed. STAY CLOSE TO GOD! Don’t wait til tragedy hits, then go crying for help. He will be there in those times, but it’s so much easier, when we are in such a closeness with the Lord, that we don’t even have to cry out, because He is right there with us when it happens; and He shields us from the storm that is certainly raging on the outside. That is why we have so much peace; because we KNOW our God is right here with us, every moment of every day.
So, if you are now going through your own storm, there is only one true Savior, and His Name is Jesus. Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Truer words have never been spoken! He has proven this in our lives time and time again, and just as He has been there for us, He will be there for EVERYONE who calls upon the Name of the Lord.
From my heart to yours!
