Last night, I looked over at my wife, Janice and took notice at how nicely her hair has grown back. The first time it grew back, after she lost it to chemo, it didn't get this long before I had to shave it off again. And now she will lose it again for the third time. Her doctor told us last week, with this new chemo she starts this coming Thursday, she will lose her hair for sure. This always brings back memories of the first time Janice asked me to go ahead and cut all her hair off. Her beautiful red hair had always been her trademark, and this cancer thought it could destroy her by taking away something precious to her. But as I began cutting, not a tear dropped, nor did it seem to bother her that I was looking at her in a way I had never seen her before. I think she knew, as I looked into her beautiful brown eyes, that I could care less. Her true beauty, nor my love for her, were dependent on her outward appearance; because those of you who know her, know as I do, that she has this beauty that radiates from the inside out, and that is something cancer CANNOT take away.

When the doctor told her this news last week, I looked over to see her reaction. After the way those 2 chemo treatments in early January hit her so hard, I was a little concerned, that in her weakened state, she may not handle the news well. But like the warrior she is, she just said, “whatever we have to do.” There were no tears, I just saw an amazingly strong Proverbs 31 Woman of God, ready for another battle in this 1203 day war. Plus, like I told someone at work last week, I love the way she looks in her wig. If you didn't know her, you would never know it was a wig. But even better than that, I love the moment she gets home from work, the first thing she does is take her wig off. That is the biggest compliment she could pay me. Because that shows me that she knows how much I love her, and that around me, she can just be herself, hair or no hair, it really makes no difference in the way I see her. In fact, it causes me to admire her more, because it’s a daily reminder of how amazingly strong she is.

So ladies, let’s never forget, “Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.” 1 Peter 3:3-4; and if truth be known, it is so precious to all of us who have the opportunity to witness such beauty.
