Prudence is certainly a word that gets bad press of late. Prude is its shortened version and we all know what party poopers they are reputed to be. They just won't allow themselves to have fun. What that really means is that they just won't lose control of themselves. For that is the true definition of prudence: keeping oneself and ones passions under guidance by what is known to be right and necessary. It doesn't mean being passionless or having no passions in life. It simply means guiding and keeping those passions in check for one's own good and the good of others.

Neither does prudence mean having but not expressing passion. It simply means moderating that expression according to what is right and necessary. In the past two to three centuries our forefathers included prudence as a vital part of their panoply of wisdom and virtue (esteeming it enough even to name some of their children by it) and were rewarded for it. Come to think of it, we've been rewarded for it too. We, then, in this new 21st century can ill afford to leave it in the dustbin.
