C. S. Lewis said, "When the most important things in life happen, often we are not aware what is happening at the time" or, in other words, we may not know what's going on in our lives. The converse may also be true: when events unfold that we think are most important in our lives, we often find later that those events have turned out to be much less significant than we thought.
Charles Spurgeon said that when our Bibles are falling apart it means that we are not! Conversely, when our Bibles are collecting dust on a shelf somewhere it means that we are falling apart, whether we have noticed it yet or not! As when Jesus urged his disciples in Mark 6 to "come apart" for a while to a solitary place, it was so they wouldn't come apart or fall to pieces in the face of all the stress.

The answer is that these disciplines expand our ways of thinking about what seem to be totally unrelated areas of content.
