Why Compete With Others?

For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.

2 Corinthians 10:12 (NIV)


Comparing one’s life with others is impractical and odious, useless and foolish. Those who match their life with second-rate living, living to someone else’s distorted beliefs, or immoral behavior, brings a perverted satisfaction which means nothing; and if one liken it to superiors, it creates discontent by focusing attention on what a person does not possess.

Why compare? One would not exchange their excellent health for another’s fair health. What about another’s disposition; friends one does not know; their sorrows; habits, disabilities—not just her/his intelligence, talent or wealth. For each person desirous of success, success and happiness are found in being yourself and in living one’s life in whatever state a person desires live in.

Prayer:

Almighty Father, teach me to accept the many gifts You have seen fit to grant me this and every day of my life. Lord guard and protect me from the evils of coveting the gifts You grant others in Your wisdom and judgment. These things I pray You in the Holy Name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
