Is money the root of all evil? Here is what the Apostle Paul said in his first letter to his disciple Timothy: “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some people eager for money have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” (1 Timothy 6:10)

You might notice that Paul did not say that money is the root of all kinds of evil, but that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Money can bring out the worst in people, and can result in lying, stealing, cheating, and in some cases even murder.

In Matthew 19, Jesus is talking to a young ruler, who asks Jesus what he would have to do to obtain eternal life. Jesus tells the young ruler he must obey the commandments. When the young ruler replied that he was already doing that, Jesus asked him to sell his worldly possessions, give them to the poor, and follow Him. This was too much to ask of the young ruler, who was very rich and controlled by his money.

Jesus used this conversation as a teaching tool for his disciples. Matthew 19:23-24: “Truly I tell you that it is hard for someone rich to enter the kingdom of Heaven. Again I tell you that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Money can be a tool to help those less fortunate, and this is pleasing to God. Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, has a net worth of 81billion dollars. Through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, he gives away millions every year to causes such as education, polio eradication, and Global Health.
