Marriage

"Wow, Richard," Trevor's father, Bob, said to Miranda's father as they jogged along the beach, "that Miranda of yours is sure the kind of wife the Beatles sang about it 'A Hard Day's Night'."

"What do you mean?" Richard asked.

"Well, when Trevor called me this morning during his break at work, he told me about the kind of day he had yesterday and the evening he had last night. He said he came home from work exhausted and in pain. During the course of his work hours he had something dropped on his toe and hit his head on a cabinet, and he spent the whole day pushing wheelchairs, sometimes pushing them a long way."

"Poor guy," Richard said.

Bob went on. "But then when he came home and told Miranda how tired and sore he was and the kind of day he'd had, Miranda, being the sweetie that she is, gave him some ice for is toe and head and put her arms around his neck and kissed him, then sat on his lap. He says he can never wait to get home because of her."

Richard smiled. "They really are in love," he said. "Miranda's a really good wife and a sweet and caring person, and I know she makes your son very happy."

Bob agreed. "Trevor loves spending time with her. He tells me they miss each other when they are at work," he said. Then he looked down and sighed. "I wish I had stayed the kind of husband Trevor is during the last years of my marriage to Henrietta. We were like that when we first got married, but then I let work take precedence over my time with her and Trevor. I'd work long hours and then not do much interacting with them when I was home. I'd eat, watch television, and sleep, but that was it. I used to get so bugged when Henrietta criticized me, but now I see I deserved it. I wasn't giving her the attention I should have. I'm often surprised that she agreed to marry me again."

Richard patted his friend's arm. "Second chances are a blessing from the Lord," he said. "He put Henrietta back into your life, because He knew He meant for the two of you to be together. Even when people are out of God's will, He always finds a way to lead them back to Him and His plan for their lives. I believe with God's help, both you and Henrietta will be the kind of spouses He wants you to be."

Bob nodded. "Thanks, Richard," he said as he gave his friend a hug. "I know I can always count on you to listen and be there for me." He looked at the waves, which seemed to have a calmness at the moment. "I was feeling a lot of disquiet, but now, because of the way God used you to speak to me just now, I have a sense of calmness and peace," he said.

"I'm glad," Richard said.

The men continued their jog, and then each returned to his own home.
