Excuses Are Not Reasons

You have set our iniquities before You, our secret sins in the light of Your countenance.

Psalms 90:8 (NIV)


During lunch break, Tim Crosswhite complained bitterly to his co-worker, Shirley Haley, that he had been working for the company for 9 years without a promotion.

“Seven of us were hired on the same day. Five of us, have moved up except me and one other woman,” he complained. “Is it because I’m a guy, a minority of color, smart or is it because I’m short?”

“Tim I’ve known you for all 9 years.”

“Yeah, I know that!” replied Tim.

“So I’m going to give you my honest assessment of your work effort:

• Do more than come to work; improve
• Do more than just sit: work
• Do more than just complain; learn
• Do more than demand; earn
• Do more than just get; give (go the extra mile)
• Do more than just hide behind your color; be a co-worker
• Do more than just look; see
• Do more than just be an observer: help
• Do more than just appear smart; be smart
• Do more than just breathe; live
• Do more than just give excuses; reflect
• Do more than just be: participate

Shirley said not another word, stood up, then left to allow Tim to ponder and reflect upon her advice. Now what are your excuses?


Prayer:

Holy and forgiving Father, forgive me this day for the excuses I have made as well as my failure to take responsibility for my actions and life. Help me to do what is right and to be truthful to You and to others. When I make excuses, direct me to truth to correct the errors of my sinful ways. I humbly pray these things. Amen.
