Desire Wisdom

Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gain understanding; for her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, and her gain than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies, and all the things you may desire cannot compare to her. Length of days is in her right hand, in her left hand riches and honor. Her ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is the tree of life to those who take hold of her, and happy are all who retain her.

Proverbs 3:13-18 (NIV)

Wisdom is precious. Think about this—when people are asked what they want more than anything else in the world, the usual response is money, beauty, power or some other items that may easily be lost or stolen. Wisdom seldom, if ever, is high on their list of personal values. The Bible extols and values it, many philosophers hunger for it; poets praise it; the wise pursue it.

The American novelist, Mark Twain, once said, “A man’s wisdom is his best friend; foolishness, his worst enemy.”

Defined, wisdom is the use of one’s knowledge, perception of the world and experience in meeting successfully the situations and circumstance of life. It opens windows to let in the fresh air of new information and ideas while at the same time being resistant to the folly of utopianism and fanaticism. Some call it discernment. Still others, horse sense. Whatever it is, the wise obtain more of it; the intelligent barely come close to possessing it; but fools, never!

Prayer:

Almighty God, Your wisdom is valuable beyond human intelligence and understanding. Your wisdom is right, good and just. Those who seek it and are granted it are endowed beyond imagination more valuable than all the wealth and power in the world. Above all things, O my God, I pray for wisdom. Grant me such wisdom not for my glory but for Your glory and power that may be known by all who witness it. These things I pray. Amen.
