It was a cavernous architectural wonder to a little boy, the attic space above our house. Reached by a pull-down ladder, on each side the perfectly aligned exposed rafters vaulted up to a high peak, and in the center the four gables came together in harmonious joinery.
In their book Escaping The Matrix authors Greg Boyd and Al Larson urge us to use our minds to internally experience our freedom in Christ, rather than just being content to know about it in theory. Our imagination can help us.
So I've imagined myself a child again, in the hallway of my boyhood home, and Jesus is there, asking me if I want to go up in the attic. Though I’m thrilled at seeing Jesus, I’m hesitant to go up there, since it was as scary as it was beautiful. But as he reaches up and pulls down the ladder, he looks me in the eye and I see an ocean of love. So I scamper up the ladder after him and as my head pops up into the attic, my jaw drops open. Above me, strung evenly along the bottom of each rafter are brilliant white Christmas lights, blinking off and on in waves. In the air is the most beautiful music I've ever heard, which somehow I am hearing through my heart instead of my ears. As I reach the top step I notice the floor – over the joists are translucent colored panels that have shadows of animals floating across them. Jesus is standing by an enormous old trunk, with a glow coming from it. As I walk over to the trunk he lifts the cover, and inside are the toys I loved to play with as a boy. He tells me I can come up to the attic any time and he will be there waiting, to play with me, for as long as I want.
In my mind I have gone up to that magical attic many times, and Jesus is always happy to see me. Sometimes we build things, sometimes we just sit and he puts his arm around me and tells me what I need most to hear.
What would you like to imagine? Create a special place where you can go and meet up with Jesus. Where are you? What are the sights, sounds, and smells? Is it just you and Jesus or are there others there too? What’s happening? How does he look at you? What is he saying to you?
