THE BRONZE SERPENT.
Impatience, ungratefulness, and doubt; these 3 qualities were portrayed in the Israelites times without number, and well, God had His way of disciplining them to bring them back to their senses. This, He did because of His Love, and the Covenant He had with their Fathers… And boy! He did discipline those guys.
One day I heard someone summarizing the whole story about the Israelites’ exodus and their attitudes; and when she talked about the “carved Bronze Serpent” Numbers 21:7-9, Iasked myself “why a carved serpent, and why bronze?” Then I thought, “Maybe it was a carved serpent because God sent serpents to inflict them”. Fair enough, but why bronze? Then it struck me sometime later while reading about the Churches in the Book of Revelations (chapters 2 and 3). Yet not I…
In Revelations 2:18, Jesus is described here, as “One who has feet like burnished Bronze”.
Now go to Ephesians 6:15, here you see that the feet has to do with “The Gospel”. Also, serpents are known for wisdom, even Jesus said it in Matthew 10:16. In1 Corinthians 1:24, Jesus is described as “the Power and Wisdom of God”, Colossians 2:2-3 says treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hid in Christ; and though referred to as a She, the description of Wisdom in Proverbs 9:1-11 refer to Jesus Christ.
The bronze serpent was a shadow of He who was to come, Our Lord Jesus Christ, The Living Word.
Doubting? Take a look at Numbers 21:9, it says the Israelites looked at The Serpent Bronze, and they lived, and Jesus said in John 6:40, that everyone who beholds The Son, Christ, and believes will have eternal Life. Likewise, in John 6:37, He talks about bread “His Word (containing Wisdom)” which endures to Eternal Life.
The Israelites beheld the bronze serpent to live a little longer, but now, we behold Jesus, the Living Word, Wisdom personified, whose feet are polished bronze that we may live Forever. Yes, Forever!
How do we do this?
First, you believe that He is i.e acknowledging the fact that He lived, died, was buried, and resurrected 3 days later that we might have life(in abundance) as you confess Him to be Lord over you, saving your Spirit (1st of 3 steps of Salvation).
Study His word, leaning not on your own understanding but asking the Holy Spirit to teach you, and ask for mercy, grace and help to be a doer and not a hearer only. See, there’s really no point spending hours studying God’s Word if you have no intention of doing what He says, becoming The Word, a living epistle others can read and understand as you walk in Love. Your Life(style) should lead others to Christ as you walk as “wise” in His Light, understanding what the Will of God is per time, Ephesians 5:15-17.
Pray, be it in the understanding, in tongues, in supplication, in groaning, in thanksgiving; whichever suits you. You can’t grow without prayer, it’s like the foundation of the building/ Temple God’s making out of you. For spiritual growth and development, The Pauline prayers are your best bet, amongst which are Philippians 1:2-6,8-11, 4:6-7; Colossians 1:10-14, 4:12, Ephesians 1:17-20; 3:17-20; 1 Thessalonians 5:17,23; 2 Thessalonians 3:1.
So you just have to keep your eyes fixed intently at The Perfect Law of Liberty, The Author and Finisher of our Faith, The Living Word, The Bronze Serpent.
The serpents, symbolic of the devil brought pain and death, the bronze serpent, symbolic of Jesus Christ Our Savior brings Life in abundance, with every good thing you can imagine.
