The Most Valuable, Most Beautiful Musical Instrument in the World

I was intrigued every time I opened the black case with the soft green lining and looked at the gleaming gold cornet. But I didn't know how to play it. So for many mornings one summer I trudged up the hill towards school, sat down behind a tree and waited for an hour to pass, with my cornet case in my lap. Then I got up and walked back home, hoping my parents wouldn't discover I was skipping band practice.

Scripture says we are to make music in our hearts to God, implying our hearts are spiritual musical instruments. Thus our hearts must be protected and cared for, just as we would protect and take care of any musical instrument. So while I missed out on playing the cornet, I don’t want to miss out on making music with my heart.

How do we care for our hearts? Could it be daily forgiving not just big things but little things as well, such as a rude driver or a stubborn neighbor? Could it require letting go of jealousies and instead praying for someone at work who drives a nicer car or a relative who has more money than you do? Could it involve paying attention to what we are looking at and listening to, avoiding strife, and being willing to help others on a moment’s notice?

What is God hearing from your heart? Is there something you want to delete from your life, or something to add, to ensure that you are able to play a beautiful melody?

“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” – Proverbs 4:20
