Give my what to who?

One morning years ago a thought suddenly splashed into my mind like raindrops falling from a cloudless sky. “Give your heart to Jesus.” I was shocked as much by the content of the thought as by how it had suddenly fallen into my consciousness. I thought I had given my heart to Jesus. I had acknowledged Jesus as my savior, was attending church, read the bible and prayed. Wasn't that enough?

These thoughts bounced around in my head that morning. In the afternoon, while driving, I turned a corner and pulled up behind a car with a bumper sticker. As I pulled up closer, I read the words in disbelief- “Give Your Heart to Jesus”. God had my full attention at that moment as goose bumps covered my body. I spoke out the words, giving Jesus my heart, not really knowing what it meant.

Years later I heard a preacher explain it this way. We can acknowledge who the president is, respect his authority, and yet not know him personally at all. So it is with Jesus. We can know who he is but not know him at all. And while he wants to build a home for his Spirit within our hearts, so he can change us from the inside out, he gives us the freedom to deny his request.

What has your heart? Is today the day to give it to Jesus?
