The Faith That Does Not Save part two

Good afternoon, everyone. Last time we examined intellectual assent as a form of faith which does not save us from coming judgement. For a fuller explanation of this, please refer to the previous post. A second major form of false security, and one perhaps even harder to evaluate, is temporal faith.

The fact is that we all need a measure of faith in order to operate in our physical world. For example, if I'm visiting a friend and they ask me to sit down in a certain chair, don't I need to have faith that the chair will hold me up? Sure. And don't I need faith that my friend is not an Ashton Kutcher wannabe, who has rigged the chair to fall?

We have faith that banks will give us our money back, that a spouse will care for the kids in our absence, that a bus will be on time, that our gas furnace won't blow up, that our plane will stay in the air, and so on. Remember though, who or what we have faith in is just as important as having faith in the first place.

You wouldn't trust a four year old to fix your car, right? Or trust an embezzler with your stock portfolio? Then why trust anyone else but God, who is in the business of saving souls, for something as extraordinarily important as our eternal well being? But people do, all the time. We'll cover this more completely in the next post.

In Evangelism Explosion, Dr. Kennedy discusses the fact that many people have prayed to God for something they need here and now. It could be anything: a better job, healing of a sick child, finances, popularity, and so forth. Many such requests are very good, and we should trust God to help us in this life.

We could say that if you trusted God for finances you had a "financial faith;" and if for your family's welfare, then you had a "family faith." For safety on a trip you possessed a "vacation faith." Kennedy says this: "There is one element all these things have in common. They are temporal, aren't they? They are all the things of this life, things of this world that shall pass away. Many people trust the Lord... for... these matters. But saving faith is trusting Christ to save you-- to save you eternally."

Lord willing, next time we will discuss in greater detail the components of this true saving faith. Don't miss it. Until then, be blessed in our blessed hope, Jesus Christ....Mike. Join my blog at www.mikestockwell.com. Thanks.
