In a dream I came upon my father in a living room in his easy chair holding a newborn infant in his long slender hands. I remember being concerned because the baby was squirming around in his hands, crawling up upon his shoulder and it was a long way from my father's shoulder near the top of the chair to the floor. He had to be very alert and responsive to the baby's movements and position so as to continue renewing his grip and control of the situation. At the same time he seemed very capable of doing so, and seemed to enjoy, even thrive upon having to be fully engaged in the task.
It was not a scene I would likely have come upon naturally speaking, because I was the youngest child in our family and my father never had the opportunity to interact with his grandchildren at that age because of the physical distance that separated them. Unless that was me in his arms that I was given the privilege of returning to see "first hand."
As I reflect on the dream though he seems to represent my heavenly Father and, yes, what infinitely long capable hands he has to nurture and shield, and protect us from what are very obvious dangers at hand. How we squirm in his hands with all our activity that sometimes threatens to slip and slide us from His sure grip, but it is really impossible because His hands are sure and reach into the far crevices, and yet He knows the very actvity itself is strengthening us for the approaching time when He will be able to loosen His grip appropriately for our own good and growth in the ongoing maturation process.
