Indeed one of the first questions atheists, agnostics and other non-believers ask when discussing the "idea of God" is, "If God were real, why can't we see Him?" Of course suggesting, if they could see God they would believe in Him.
Now usually we go on to explain that if there's a design then there's clearly a designer, and whenever we can, we'd point to a building and ask, "Do you doubt at all that the building over there has a builder, simply because you can't see him?"
This is more or less the stance Paul takes in Romans 1:20 saying, "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - His eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse."
This of course is never quite enough for the unbeliever, and although we don't necessarily OWE them an explanation, I think it would be worthwhile to explore the idea of a world with the visible God they so apparently desire and to raise a question of my own. Would atheism really die if God were visible?
Just imagine it. Firstly, we'd have scientists and more specifically evolutionists who would simply claim, "This marvellous creature has evolved far beyond any other known species on Earth. To the point of being able to manipulate energy and matter" They would probably go on to add, "In a 100 million years perhaps we humans will also have evolved to this point."
The same people who believe mankind was way too primitive to build such things as pyramids would be all too quick to say, "Well by the simple existence of this being known as God, we can reasonably conclude that aliens do in fact exist, they are responsible for the pyramids. And the only question now is, when will other alien life forms make contact?"
Other religions would find the notion of a visible God absolutely laughable because of course His visibility would render Him finite.
If He were omnipresent, that is to say, visible from everywhere. That would be explained as a large population of these aliens or creatures on Earth. If He were in one place, then we wouldn't see Him as all-powerful.
For the number of people who would obey Him, it would be out of reluctant compliance more than it would be out of genuine love and free will. It would be closer to dictatorship than the relationship we know He desires to have with us.
In that world, atheists wouldn't be any more convinced about God than they are now, in fact probably much less. Their reasoning would be then, "The fact that we see this so-called 'God' proves that He is subject to the same laws of nature we are, so how could He have created us?."
Call me crazy, but I'd like to think the God who created the Universe was smart enough to realise that there is much less to gain from showing Himself in a the physical plane than He does from manifesting Himself through a spiritual one.
We should also remember that in early Genesis, it was Adam and Eve who hid from God after they sinned. Too ashamed to be seen by Him. How much more would we be hiding from Him today if we could see Him? Actually, how much more are we hiding from Him now, denying His very existence so that we won't have to come to terms with our sinful nature?
I could almost bet you, that in that world, just as we do today. We'd see people live their lives as sinful as they'd choose and only approach the sovereign Lord when they're almost ready to die.
The last thing to note is, if indeed there is an All-powerful, All-knowing, All-seeing God. Then we should stop expecting Him to be God on our terms, abiding by our rules, and doing as we see fit based on our understanding. Instead it should be us who surrender to Him.
Remember, your comprehension is not a prerequisite for your cooperation, so says Bishop Joseph Garlington. Stop seeking excuses and start seeking Him.
Truly Yours
