Jeremiah 3:14 says turn O backsliding children, saith the Lord; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and tow of a family, and I will bring you to Zion.
My thought is God is married to the backslider. Backsliding is the last thing that cross any Christian’s mind. When we get saved, we are on fire for the Lord. We tell everyone we know about Jesus, whether they want to hear it or not. We pass out bible tracts, attend every service and even spend money to travel across the country to attend ministry conferences. Our friends who know we are born again begin to avoid us like the plague because they are tired of hearing about Jesus. Besides, they feel that they are Christians too!
We possess two or three different bibles, various translations and bible dictionaries. In addition, we purchase books, DVD sets and CD teachings of our favorite preachers. Furthermore, we send faith offerings. At this point we are head over hills for Jesus and we ought to be because he has truly saved us from hell. The employees at the shopping malls become familiar with us because we spend large amounts of money on church clothes for Sunday services.
After some time has passed, things begin to change little by little. We start skipping out on church, our prayer life and bible reading begins to dwindle and before we know it, we are back in the world. What happened? We were doing good, praising God and living the Christian life. What happened is that we let our flesh get in the way and became lazy. Laziness is of the flesh, but I don’t want to talk specifically about the flesh. I want to focus more so on backsliding.
Personally speaking, I been to several altar calls was in and out the church more than a few times. I don’t glory because I am ashamed for doing that. Especially knowing how good God is and what he has done for me. I have been saved for about ten years. Never once did I think I would backslide on God. It happened slowly and progressively by my willful neglect. But God is married to the backslider. Even when we are not faithful, God is faithful. The thing that hurts me the most is that when God asked me will I be faithful, I said yes and as time passed, I backslid on God.
Obviously no one wants to be a backslider. No wants to turn their back on God since God never turned his back on us. Backsliding has got to be one of the top biggest sins because how could a man turn his back on God and it not be counted as a sin unto him? When a man turns his back on God, he opens the door for the devil to walk in. Only a fool would turn his back on God and I have been a fool several times. God is married to the backslider. The devil could have had his way with my life but God is married to me.
Now I understand why God hates divorce. What God has joined together let not man put under. Marriage between a man and woman is a bond. The word is derived from the word bondage. It is a union, holy matrimony. When the man and woman gets married, they are also married to God. So when a divorce occurs, its like they are divorcing God. When you backslide on God it is called spiritual adultery. But God is married to the spiritual adulterer.
Isaiah 1:18 says come now, let us reason together saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Let us come back to Jesus because he is the source of our life. God never did anything wrong to us. We did everything wrong to God. So how do we backslide on God? There are a few ways possibly more. Let’s examine two: Temptation is one of the ways that we backslide on the Lord.
James 1:14 says every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed, then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin when it is finished bringeth forth death.
The temptation of sin contributes to drawing us away from God. The truth is that we cannot be drawn away unless we allow it. There is a fight between the old man and the new man. Sometimes the old man wins and other times, the new man wins. But as long as we remain in Christ, we will win because Jesus already won the battle. Nevertheless, temptation is no excuse to backslide on God.
Deception is another way we backslide on God. St. Matthew 24:24 says for there shall arise false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; in so much that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
Understand this: the devil can work miracles, signs and wonders(2 Thessalonians 2:9). If any man does not confess that Jesus is the only begotten Son of God and that Jesus came in the flesh, believe him not. The devil knows the Word of God and was with God in Heaven before his rebellion.
In conclusion, we are living in days where we are falling away from God. It is advisable that we backslide on the devil instead of backsliding on God because God created heaven for us and hell for the devil but we keep filling it up. Backsliding brings a lack of peace and an abundance of torment. We will go through our ups and downs which is a part of life. I pray that no matter what happens in our lives we keep our mind on Jesus and stop backsliding. Amen.
