Exodus 20:12 (NIV) “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.”

What an appropriate verse for Father’s Day. When was the last time you read the Ten Commandments? Have you ever noticed that this is the only Commandment with a special blessing attached to the end of it? I wonder why that is? It must be because family is very important to God. Fathers are especially important to God for they are the head of the family. For this reason God has set aside many passages on “how to be a Godly father.” Fathers never get this right which sometimes makes it more difficult to honor your father; but honor is not contingent on dad following these instructions, honor is unconditional. What does it mean to honor your father?

Honor: a source of credit or distinction (Dictionary.com). On Father’s Day we honor our fathers with phone calls, posting tributes on Facebook, decorating cards, and giving ugly ties as gifts; we give dad the “credit or distinction” for the day. This is nice, but do you know how most fathers want to receive “credit and distinction?” We want to see it in your lives; we want to be the “source” and not the receiver of “credit and distinction.” Fathers say it all the time, we want for our children to do better and have more than we ever had. What we desire is your success; your success in school, your career, your finances, your marriage, your parenthood, and especially with your walk with God. Honor us with your lives; one day, as we look down from heaven all fathers want their Father to pat them on the back and say “You did a fine job with your children.” Honor us with your lives. Happy Father’s Day Dad I hope I have honored you with my life.
