Not Without a Fight

The sin nature, it has been correctly said, will not go down easily or let go without fight. Sometimes we call it the flesh or the flesh nature, but that is too easily confused with physical flesh or the body. It's not the body or the "flesh" that's evil, it's the sin nature which tries to control the body. I'm glad Christianity, unlike many other faiths, has a high view of the body. The body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. At any rate that sinful nature does not go down without a fight, and it's a dirty fighter, biting off the ear as it falls! This kind of thing actually happens, a baseball player was let go recently for biting off part of the ear of his own team mate in a brawl. That player's ear will now require reconstructive surgery, yet he has decided not to press charges. But in this case we're talking about a spiritual phenomenon in which the sinful nature strikes when least expected, biting off the ear in the sense of trying with its commotion to tear away our ability to hear inwardly the voice of the Spirit. It's good to know that God has his own unique version of reconstructive surgery should we fall prey to the dirty tactics of our adversary. Our hearing, if temporarily lost, can be promptly restored through repentance. And the charges have already been pressed at the cross of Christ!
