Encouragement

Something as basic as this gets easily lost: conveying to someone by greeting them and by the way we greet or acknowledge them that their very existence makes a difference to us and enriches our existence. And yet even those within churches seems to miss this. Granted, they (or we) are mostly not hostile or openly hateful to each other, nonetheless a message of indifference often gets communicated (and that may be worse than hostility, against which we can at least brace ourselves) which silently states: “It doesn’t matter to me whether you’re here or not. I don’t care whether you live or die between know and the next time I see you, nor do I care that you survived till now since the last time. If I hadn’t seen you today I would in no wise have missed you. Sorry, just being honest, you understand.” Whereas the Holy Spirit within is wanting to be liberated to say, “I’m so glad I got to see you today. It’s great that you’re here. You are helping so much to make my day and I would have been the poorer for not having had this opportunity. You have truly enriched me! I’m glad you’re alive. You add to my gladness that I’m alive. I thank God for you!” This need not always be said verbally, but it can be conveyed by the very enthusiasm of our greeting and a lively interest in the ones we encounter as we go about our day.
