Encouragement

I remember well the story of Hansel and Gretel. My most vivid memory of the story is how the children strew bread crumbs to mark their journey. The birds ate the crumbs, thus destroying their path. The way home was obscured.

I feel somewhat like the children of that Grimm Fairy Tale. Lately my journey in life has taken me on many detours, causing my steps of faith to stumble. Thinking, “I have been with God before and I can find my way back anytime”. That was faulty thinking. My own old path was like the “trail of bread crumbs”. I had let “Birds” of discouragement, disillusionment and grief peck away at my Joy . It seemed “vultures” were circling around my soul to destroy it.

Each attempt I made at praying was futile. I felt empty. The way back to God brought more detours. Finally, I began to question my salvation. I was running on my own resources and not to the Lord. My question was, “if I am really saved, would I feel this way?” My feelings began to give way to despair. I did not want to share this pain with anyone for fear they would be disappointed in me. (pride!)

When my focus was finally directed toward the Lord, I found refuge in Psalm 51. “Create in me a clean heart, O God. And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence. And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the Joy of Your Salvation. Uphold me by Your generous Spirit.” (Psalm 51:10-12)

Going on a journey is usually a nice thing; but sometimes it is sad. Either way, coming home is always a wonderful experience. The father of the prodigal waited for his son to return and welcomed him with open arms when he arrived. My journey has been like that of the prodigal. Satan used his weapons of discouragement against me…and I nearly surrendered!

I felt Simon Peter’s remorse, grief and discouragement when he said to the other disciples. “I’m going fishing!” . Peter’s fears were relieved when Jesus met him and the other disciples along the shore and gave Peter a chance once again to express his love and devotion to the Master.

Praise the Lord! He is faithful to His Word. Jeremiah said , "when we call upon the Lord and pray to Him, He will listen!. You will find Me when you search for Me with all of your heart.” (Paraphrase Jeremiah 29:12-13)

Father, I’m home!. Thank you for keeping the Light on!
