Family Background is Immaterial to God – by Adekunle Lawal

“And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have I not sent thee?” (Judges 6: 14 KJV).

Some Christians think that God is interested in the activities of their family members, either past or present, in His relationship with them. This is far from truth. God deals with everybody on a personal level.

Considering Gideon, the personality in our Bible text; we discover that the young man came from ungodly family background. But Gideon did not allow this to stop him from worshipping the only true and living God, the God of Israel. Gideon made himself available for God to use; and God used him to destroy his family idolatry, and to secure victory over the enemies of Israel, the Midianites. As a result of this, he made a difference in his lifetime. A Christian can make a difference for God regardless of where he is coming from.

God did not look at Gideon’s ungodly family background; God only looked at his heart, and he was used mightily. What Gideon achieved, none of his family members had ever reached that level of commitment. This was why God told Gideon to go forth in his might; a man that had not even carried out the assignment! God sees characters in us that are invisible to people around us (Psalm 139: 14). Do what God has laid in your heart, provided it does not violate the Word of God. May God be with you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
