The five foolish virgins of Matthew 25 cried to the five wise virgins for more oil, their lamps were going out. In other words, they were losing hope. They were hoping to absorb some of the hope of the wise by osmosis, but it doesn't always work that way. It's not smart, as the saying goes, to wait till we're dying of thirst to dig a well. The best, most intelligent digging isn't done in a frantic state. Hope has to be carefully and deliberately cultivated. Hope takes time. Yes, they were virgins and yes, they had lamps and yes, they had certain things going for them. "After all," they could cleverly have said to the wise, "Shouldn't you share your share, isn't that why your portion is called a share, so you can SHARE it?" That's a good approach to take, as long it's your own share you take it with, and not someone else's.
