There is nothing different happening in Ethiopia today than was happening in Russian under Stalin," said Colonel Solomon Belete, a native Ethiopian. Belete, who has been on a lecture tour throughout the United States, spoke before a group of students at noon last Thursday in the Bechtel International Center.

After giving a thumbnail sketch of Ethiopia's history, geography, and demographics, Belete explained some of the tactics the Marxists have used in destroying the former government under Emperor Haille Selassie.

Politically generated famines are one such tactic. Belete explained that most of the money given to the Ethiopian government by the West for the purpose of feeding its poor starving peasants never reaches the peasants. Instead, most of this money is used for other purposes like building a strong army through the massive purchases of Soviet weapons. "Famine is nothing new in Ethiopia but it has never been like anything we have seen in the last couple of years," said Belete.

Currently, Ethiopians between 18 and 30 years of age are conscripted into the army, but with the present economic and political turmoil, Belete said, "there is no way the economy can sustain such a large economy." Saving food and making provisions for the starving masses is illegal. The government has decreed, "It is a capital offense to save food."

Terrorism is another tactic the Marxists have used quite effectively against the peasants. "The East Germans have already
stationed about 12 terrorist organizations in Ethiopia," said Belete. The Marxists are making a concentrated effort at practicing "subversion, domination, and infiltration to conquer Africa." As in any Marxist revolutionary takeover, the freedoms of the Ethiopians are being destroyed.

Belete left Ethiopia in 1977 after he was given orders by the Mengistu regime to exterminate thousands of his fellow Ethiopians. He refused to carry out the orders and then fled the country to escape punishment. He has served as a colonel in the Ethiopian army, a special commando, a weapons training office, a battalion commander, and a commandant in tghe Ethiopian Marine Corps.

The qualifications of Belete's zealous and informative missionary message include his degree in geography and military science from Haile Selassie University. He also graduated from the National Defense Academy and the Command and Staff College in Ethiopia.
