Our Terminal Need for God

Did you get to see The Terminal with Tom Hanks and Carolyn Zeta Jones at the movies? It was a different role for Tom, and a poignant reminder of a spiritual need all of us have for God. You may say, "I didn't see any religious overtones in that movie!" If you were to ask the producers they would probably deny it also, but let's take a look at the plot together.

Tom's character gets stuck in a New York terminal because his country is no longer recognized by our government, so he becomes a man without a home-a non-person. He tries to survive on what the administration of the airport gives him, but he loses some of his vouchers for food and other services. So, he has to use his wits to endure what he is going through.

He gets a job, makes many friends, then falls in love with Carolyn's character, a stewardess enamored with many men who are already married, and seeing her on the sly. Tom tries to show her what a revolving door she is in with her other relationships, but she never quite takes that vital step to break the habit she has started. She wants a good relationship, but that is as far as it goes. Tom tries several times to get her to love him as he loves her, but to no avail.

We are in the same type of endless cycle of a going-nowhere life that Carolyn was enacting. We may think we have it all together, but when looked at from the outside, it is vanity-emptiness. God has sent His Son, Jesus, to rescue us from our dilemma but many times we still want to go our own way. God tries all through our lives to show us his love, but we spurn it over and over-sometimes until it is too late. God wants so badly to have us close to Him, and He is patient and longsuffering in his attempts to help us.

This film can be taken for face value as it was intended-just entertainment. But, you can take it to the next level, if you wish, and think about the underlying meaning for your life as well. Whether or not you agree with my observations, it is still something to contemplate. The answer you decide to accept will help determine your destiny both in this life and the one to come.
