"When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also." 2 Timothy 1:5
This marks the day my great grandmother was born August 6, 1898. My great grandmother Iva Lois Northington, affectionately known as Lois, was a Texan by birth who grew up in Texas and Oklahoma. She was a strong willed woman with a kind heart...one of twelve sibblings.
Lois was poor and grew up on a farm. With only a sixth grade education my great grandmother had alot of horse sense and a keen memory for details especially things that happened in the family long ago. Many times throughout my younger years she would tell me things that happened long ago with amazing detail.
I would say she had more than the smarts of most high school students today but in a good way ofcourse. I have many wonderful memories of this lady who reared me at age 59 when my own mother and grandparents were not willing or able. Wow, I must confess that was quite a job and responsibility she took upon herself and I know she had her hands full. I'm not sure how she did it at her age and with a rambunctious youth such as myself but I give her a lot of credit as the grace of God was with her guiding her the best way she knew how.
Lois Northington lived a long life passing away at the age of 93 back on April 12, 1992. I recall visiting her during the week at the convalescent hospital after her stroke. Her stroke left her left arm and leg paralyzed and thus bedridden but her mind and vision was always sharp right up to the end of her life.
I believe she's in heaven now enjoying the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to whom all praise and glory belong.
Take time to remember your loved ones today. You will not always have them with you. Consider keeping a diary or journal of how the Lord is working in your life. It was a commonplace matter in years past to journal one's day to day activities. I'm thankful I kept a diary starting at age 13 after reading the diary of Anne Frank but I'm saddened that since moving to Hollywood, Ca in 1996 I've failed to continue doing so.
I'm hoping to once again take up this matter as it has many benefits.
