"The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe." Proverbs 18:10


True believers in Jehovah have fled to refuge in the Eternal God who is LORD, even the great "I am". The name of the LORD, as we pointed out yesterday, is Jehovah or Yahweh, also known as the great "I am that I am". Nobody can say "I am that I am" except the LORD because there is only one person who is self-existence, triune, Alpowerful and never changing.

When we consider who this God is that has revealed Himself to finite man we stand in awe and great wonder at so majestic a Creator. This God is immutable or unchanging so that His promises stand true even when we by nature are promise breakers. God doesn't waver in His words. He can not lie even though we have lied. What God has promised He will fulfill. Those who have the faith of Abraham are counted righteous being children of Abraham and heirs of the promise. No sin can be charged to their account.

Consider the safety in God's name. Where else can we find safety in this wicked world? All around us are "dangers, toils and snares" as the blessed John Newton described in his beautiful hymn "Amazing Grace."


By nature we are all children of wrath, under the curse of sin, taken captive by Satan and willingly so for we love to sin and to do the lusts of the Devil. But not so the righteous. The righteous have the faith of Jesus Christ. They hate sin and turn from it by repentance. They do not trust in themselves or their works for their righteousness but only in the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Nothing can touch them because "if God be for us who can be against us?" Romans 8:31


Imagine a tall tower built as a fortress and you are alone out in the desert with no place to run or hide from your enemy. You are an easy prey for your adversaries with their many arrows who seek to shoot and kill you. Solomon knew this and so he pictures the true believer inside a tower which is compared to the name of the LORD. There is no arrow of the wicked that can penetrate a tower of stone. The name of the LORD is like a strong tower and we who are inside have access to all that God is. This is a treasure, a fortress, a hiding place and a refuge from any and everything that can destroy or hurt us.


Praise the LORD! God's character and all that He is as God is for the believer who takes refuge in Him alone.

Your enemy Satan is like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. Now if you can run to this tower you will find protection from Satan. Running to the name of the LORD, that is, all who God is as a Creator and Savior is yours if you are one of His righteous ones. Notice the verse says, "the righteous runneth into it and is safe."

We must take heed however, for many an unrighteous person flatters himself that he is safe from his enemies by trusting to a God of his own imagination that doesn't correspond to the true LORD. Let no unrighteous person think himself safe who is practicing wickedness or sin. Such will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

Many professing Christians are ignorant of the one they claim allegiance to. Upon careful examination they may not believe the LORD as He reveals Himself in Holy Scripture. Let us not err on the person of God and so be in danger of worshipping a false God.

One of the many attributes of God within the name of the LORD is His eternal deity, that is, God's eternality. God is without beginning or end. He has always been. He is self-existence with no need for anybody to sustain His person. He is totally independent of His creation. We need food and water and clothing but God needs none of these things. We as humans can grow weak and weary but not so God. He doesn't age and so the LORD is as strong to protect us today as He was yesterday and will be so tomorrow and forevermore.

Beloved we have a God who is Almighty in power or omnipotent. He alone is able to save us from our sins because He alone can forgive sins. The Scribes in Jesus' day believed this for they said in

Mark 2:7 "Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?" The Scribes were correct ofcourse that only God can forgive sins and this is why the righteous are safe in the name or person of the LORD. It is this LORD to whom we run and find salvation.

I pointed out in my last article that Psalm 9:10 "And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee." To know God's name is to be known by God. It is to find a special saving favor with God. This is what it means to be chosen by God.


Do you know the name of the LORD which is to say do you know the character and saving transcendent attributes of this LORD to whom you must flee to escape His wrath? I didn't say do you know about the LORD or do you profess attachment to the LORD but have you had your sins forgiven and trusted in His saving mercy?

"And this is life eternal, that they might KNOW THEE the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." John 17:3


Only the righteous know the LORD and His Son Jesus Christ. Only the righteous know God's name and these run into Him and are safe. Nothing can touch them or cause them to perish. There are many verses in the Bible that give us this assurance, comfort and encouragement. Let us always trust in the true God and never waver in our faith by doubting the person of God for He is faithful who has promised and He will perform it.
