Voting: A Part of Our Heritage

In light of the recent elections across the country, I want to give my insight on what happened Tuesday. The Republicans gained control of both the House and Senate. For Christian conservatives, this was a good thing because Republicans are generally considered as people who will promote godly principles in our nation. The Democrats are viewed as liberals who are opposed to Christian values. Well, whether you are a Republican or Democrat,I hope you voted Tuesday because this is a privilege Americans can't take for granted. You know, in many other countries the people can't choose who they want. That's what makes this country so great. We can choose leaders who stand for righteousness and Christian values.

Unfortunately, voter turnout has been low. In my home state of Louisiana, the turnout was expected to be forty percent, and maybe even lower because of bad weather. Every election is important but this is especially important because we have a chance to elect godly leaders. Imagine unborn babies' lives being saved or more abstinence teaching in high schools. One vote can cause this to happen.

Some of you are thinking, "Whenever I choose a politician, they forget about their promises to the voters." Well, some of them do. But we can't let that stop us from voting. This is part of our heritage as Americans.

I hope you voted and that the leaders you chose were not just Republicans or Democrats but leaders who stand for God's Word.

Great article! Alas I didn't vote. I have a real problem with my scruples. I can't vote with the liberals because I belong to a right-to-life group. And liberals often are for abortion. I can't vote with the conservatives because I belong to an anti-death penalty group. And the conservatives are often for the death penalty, although they are against abortion. It really hurts my heart that this is the way things usually are in American politics. In many other countries, Christian politicians usually are pro-life all the way: against abortion, against the death penalty, but not in the US. So although I really like to vote, I have never been able to make the compromise on this. People often assume that people who don't vote are simply apathetic. They often forget taht we don't vote simply because for many Christians there is no such thing as choosing "the lesser of two evils." God's will, unfortunately, doesn't fit in neatly with state politics. Anyways, I liked your article. But I didn't think you considered this point. -Carole
