I recall years ago during my studies of the Bible that a certain group among the cults would make it a point to emphasize that the name of God is Jehovah and that we should only use that name in referring to God.

Actually, God uses many names for Himself to reveal to us finite creatures His many attributes. For example, He uses "Jehovah Jireh" meaning The LORD will provide. Genesis 22:14

14. "And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen."


In the Old Testament the covenant name of God revealed to Moses on Mount Sinai is Yahweh or "Jehovah". In many Bible translations the word YHWH is used in place of Yahweh because the Greek word for "four" is Tetra and the "letters" as in a alphabet means grammaton thus the word Tetragrammaton.

In Hebrew, the name Jehovah is often translated I'AM. It could be translated "He causes to happen" or more loosely, "the One Who Makes It So."

In Exocdus 34:4-7 God reveals to us His goodness and many mercies and so we can see how the name came to imply "The One Who Makes the Good Thing Happen"

The Yah part of the tetragrammaton creates the first part of the Hebrew name Joshua meaning Saviour which is the Old Testament version of Jesus. So since the word Jesus means "Saviour" we could say that the name of Jesus means "the one who makes salvation happen." Every true believer knows this to be true because "Salvation is of the LORD." Jonah 2:9

Note: Jesus makes salvation not just possible as some would like to read it but Jesus makes salvation happen. There's a big difference in implication here.

If God left salvation up to man then nobody would be saved because man is "dead in trespasses and sins" (Eph 2:1)hopelessly lost in his blindness to sin and Satan. Man needs to be "born again" and this happens monergistically (meaning God does the work apart from man's decision or ability) by the Holy Spirit making alive the dead soul and cleansing and washing it from all sin.

Whenever you read the word "LORD" in all capital letters in the Bible you'll now know this means Jehovah and Jehovah is powerful or mighty to save.
