Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. Psalm 119:165



The Hebrew word for offend is mikshol which means a stumbling-block, literally or figuratively (obstacle, an enticement as enticed to sin(specifically an idol). They which love the law of God will never be enticed to sin or commit idolatry or stumble because they have a great peace.

They who truly love the law of God have a satisfying peace and a salvation peace and these show that they have the love of God in them. By this love they have a peace which settles their hearts and minds. Their affections, in the inward man, are anchored around God and His law which proceeds out of His mouth and guards the believer from being enticed to sin. The righteous keep God's commandments for it is their delight. Psalm 1:2; John 14:15.

As there is a natural delight in those who love what they do, whether work or play, so also there is a supernatural peace or delight within all those who lovingly keep the commandments of God because the war they waged against God before their conversion has been abrogated. The hatred for God and His righteous way has been absolved by the peace of God which passes all understanding. Philippians 4:7.

Experience teaches this truth that our own obedience to the law is imperfect and cannot be used to justify us before God because we are not righteous apart from the imputed obedience of the Lord Jesus Christ who is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification and redemption. I Corinthians 1:30; Philippians 3:9). Our justification is rooted in the obedience of God's Son who kept the law perfectly (Romans 5:17-19).

Yes, Great peace have they which love God's law: and nothing shall offend them.

This peace the world can not know for they have not the love of God. John 5:42 Such restless and rebellious souls despise the law and word of God and set up their own law in its place. This was the Pharisees of old and that same spirit still continues in the children of disobedience who stumble or are offended at Christ and His law word Mark 6:3. These worldly souls are hard hearted and have not learned the way of peace. Romans 3:17

Can there be a greater peace than that which God makes with a sinful man who is at war with his maker? That soul which was in bondage to sin and Satan was restless and quick to do his own thing without regard to God and sought many a way to fill his empty soul with sinful pleasures which never truly satisfy or bring peace.

When the peace of God takes hold upon a soul there is a love for God and His law. It is impossible to love God and not love His law just as it is impossible to love the Father and not love His Son; likewise all they who love the law of God also love the great giver of that law the Lord Jesus Christ our Prophet, Priest and King. Jesus spoke to his disciples so that they would not be offended by anything. John 16:1; Matthew 11:6

This peace isn't just any peace but a GREAT peace for there was a great war against God and His people before the iniquity of the rebel was purged or atoned for as the apostle Paul would testify through the revelation that God had given to him "Saul, Saul why persecutest thou me?" Acts 9:4-5. Saul was also a rebel against Jesus who thought himself alive without the law but when the commandment came, sin revived, and he died. Romans 7:9. Was Saul offended by the Christians? Absolutely!
But praise be to our Lord Jesus who revealed Himself to Saul's stony heart (Galatians 1:15-16) and drew him with cords of Divine love giving him a peace with God. John 6:44; Rom. 5:1

Oh, beloved Great peace have they which love God's law: and nothing shall offend them. Psalm 119:165

If we know anything of this peace then we know there is now a respect or reverance for God and by this respect men depart from the evil of sin. (Proverbs 16:6)

What is sin? Sin is defined as a transgression of God's law. (1 John 3:4) Does it stand to reason that those are most uneasy, unsatisfied and unsettled who practice sin and thus show themselves enemies to God? Many call Jesus "Lord, Lord" but they do not the things He says. Luke 6:46 and therefore these have no true peace with God or peace within.

But Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.


We owe our allegiance and obedience to God because He is the only person of infinite worth and majesty, the supreme ruler, governor and only Creator of the universe. His law governs us for our good. Like a father who gives his children good rules to follow for their protection and safety so our heavenly Father gives us His law and word for our benefit and those are most comfortable in their conscience and soul who love His law.

Natural man is at war with God and there is a natural propensity to rebel at that which is good but the love of God through Christ Jesus our Lord gives a peace which the world can not give. Indeed there is no peace saith my God to the wicked. Isa. 48:22) The wicked follow their leader and are offended both by Jesus Christ and by His followers.

Let us not be as the world lest we be condemned with the world and her offenses for there must needs be offenses for Christ pronounced a "woe unto the world because of offenses! for it must needs be that offenses come; but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh! Matthew 18:7 Let us seek peace with all men and holiness without which no man shall see God. Let us be cautious to avoid that false and illusionary peace which the world gives. John 14:27

Yes, Great peace have they which love thy law; and nothing shall offend them.


Those who hate the law of God love the world and the lust thereof and they are easily offended. These stumble in many ways by breaking the commandments of God. The righteous who love the law have the peace of God and nothing shall offend them by way of snares or stumbling-blocks for they are reconciled to God by the grace of God. Neither are those who love God's law hurt by anything eternal for the peace of God abides upon and within them for good. Indeed all things work together for good to them that love God (Romans 8:28)
