Marriage

Let us look at the scriptural view of marriage. The Bible says that a woman which hath a husband is bound to her husband by the law as long as he lives, that is, as long as the husband is alive. But if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. Verse 3 so then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. Romans 7:1,2

Now the beautiful relationship of a husband and a wife is typified by the relationship between Christ and His bride, the church, and before a person becomes saved they too are married. They have a husband.

Who is that husband?

It is the law of God and they are bound to that law as long as that husband lives. How long does that law live? Well, the law never dies does it? The law is good, holy and just but we die to that law if we are in Jesus Christ.

When do we die to that law and how do we die to that law? By being espoused to Christ by being married to Christ and to be married to Christ we must first die. In Galatians 2:20 Paul says, "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me."

So we see that we are crucified or dead with Christ. As Christ died so we died but we are also resurrected along with Christ's resurrection from the dead and that's what enables us to live again. Now that we are alive we are able to be remarried to a new husband and that is to Jesus Christ. So now we have a different relationship to the law and view it diferently.

When we were married to the law all the law could do was condemn us. It stirred up the corruption in our hearts and the reigning power of sin and corruption. You see our life was like a river flowing with sin and corruption and the law was like a dam, an imperfect dam but a dam nevertheless. It doesn't stop sin. It doesn't keep us from sinning. It stirs up the corruption within us just like a dam causes the stream to swell higher and to rage more swiftly but it doesn't prevent the water from flowing from it's source. Likewise, the law is perfect and good BUT it doesn't keep us from sinning. It just shows us all the more that we are sinners in need of God's grace and mercy. The law is a school master to bring us to Christ and to point us or direct us to the Lord Jesus Christ. We can not divorce ourselves from that law.

"Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith." Gal. 3:23

Every unsaved person is under that law and is married to that law and will suffer the penalty for breaking that law. The transgression of the law is sin and "the wages of sin is death" and the death that God has in view is ETERNAL DEATH (Romans 6:23)

The only way to be divorced from the law of God, as a covenant of works (or justification) is to be crucified with Christ and to die with Him. NOTICE: The law does not die but rather we die to the law and now we are free to be remarried. Thus it is in the marriage bond. A husband and wife are not to divorce. In the Old Testament a wife could never leave her husband just as in the New Testament. Neither is there any provision outside of Jesus Christ for us leaving the law of God as a means of justification. "Therefore, being justified by faith we have peace with God" Romans 5:1

By dying to the law we are free to remarry another and that is Christ. Now normally when a person is dead they can't remarry but in this case we are spiritually dead and we died to the law. When we become born again and we are born from above, we are united to Christ and now we are married to Christ, our new husband and there can never be a divorce. To divorce ourselves from Christ, to forsake Christ, would be to commit spiritual adultery. We would show ourselves to be FAITHLESS and without the faith of Christ and therefore still in our sins and under condemnation.

"He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." John 3:18


Therefore, we only thought we were married to Christ professing Him to be our Lord and savior but the fact that we left and forsook Christ showed that we were still married to the law.
