Break no heart that doth not need
Turning ever near to Thee
Afflict no soul, with burdens great
Save they who tarry not of late
For Thou art kind, and Thou art wise
Beyond what men see with their eyes
If Thou wouldst have me laden with sorrow
Do so I may more rightly follow

Break no heart of flesh but stone
Shall be crumbled at Thy throne
Guilt no conscience undeserved
Only that Thy designs be served
For Thou lovest all, and 'tis returned
By far fewer than all those concerned
Let me love Thee more each day
That Thou wouldst often comfort say

Break no heart with undue pain
Thou bestoweth for our gain
'Tis not a sign of hate that cometh
Thou doth chasteneth whom Thou loveth
For Thou wouldst gladly suffer anew
That we might enter into truth
Would that I may count it joy
To endure hardship, undestroyed
