What is truth?
Truth is found first of all in a person Jesus Christ. In our modern society there is the teaching or philosophy as found in our secular universities even high schools, that there is no truth, that is, there is no absolute truth. Truth is only relative we are told.
What is true for you may not be true for me. Thus, when a Christian addresses or proclaims a truth of the gospel as found in the scriptures in Jesus Christ his classmates may say, "Well, that's great. I'm glad that that is true for you and that seems to help you through your life and getting through all your difficulties and all your doubts and it gives you some type of comfort this faith of yours BUT don't try to impose it upon me. It's not my truth; it's not my value you see."
It has been said by somebody that totalitarianism is the will to power unchecked without regard for truth.
You see truth checks our attitudes. It checks our actions. It checks our affections. Now sometimes our affections are affected by our actions. Sometimes our affections are affected by our attitudes, that is, our attitudes cause the affections that we hold (our emotions).
Sometimes our emotions or affections arise from something that we do. Oftentimes people do things that are bad and they feel bad about them. Their conscience IS working. They're depressed and the counselor says, "Well, what is it that you've been doing these days? What is it that you've done? Have you done something that you shouldn't have done? Admittedly, the counselee will open up and confess, "Yes, I have been unfaithful to my wife. Yes, I have lied or cheated. Yes, I have not guarded my tongue from gossip or slander so that these affections are the result of one's sinful actions.
Truth is perceived in our modern culture as either relative or absolute. Christians hold that truth is absolute because it is found in God's word which is absolute, authoritative and trustworthy for all ages. A lot of people have this mistaken notion that there is no absolute truth.
For example, scholars, professors in their secular and worldly wisdom disparage Christians for their naivete. They say Christians are trusting in a book that's so old that it doesn't have relevance in today's culture. Oh, it was fine for the Jews thousands of years ago or for the early Christians because they did not have the modernization that we experience today through technology and so on. So the validity or invalidity of scripture is seen through the eyes of modernity.
But let us look at truth and see why it does not change. Truth doesn't change because Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. That doesn't mean applications of the truth may not change but truth itself in its very nature or essence doesn't change.
Unbelievers think that truth is bondage and that we are to do what we want or believe. We are told to do what seems right to you in order to get in touch with yourself. This is why the twentieth century prisons are so full today. Everybody is doing what is right in their own eyes.
The people who advocate these ideas do the work of the Devil. When you come to the Bible look at it as truth because everything in it is true and ask yourself how it affects you today. What should be your attitude toward the truth? How does it cause you to live a holier, more godly or better life? How does it cause you to obey God and to love Him more?
Let's looks at some principles taken from Pastor John Piper's book," A Godward Life" Ten Reasons To Love Truth
1. Biblical truth saves 1 Tim. 4:16; Acts 20:26, 27:2; 2 Thess. 2:10
2. Biblical truth frees from Satan You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free John 8:32; 2 Tim. 2:24-26
3. It imparts grace and peace. "May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God
and of Jesus Christ our Lord. 2 Pet. 1:2
4. Biblical truth sanctifies. "Sanctify them in truth; your word is truth" John 17:17; 2 Tim. 3:16-17
5. Biblical truth serves love. Philippians 1:9
6. Biblical truth protects from error. Ephesians 4:13-14
7. Biblical truth is the hope of heaven. 1 Cor. 13:12
8. Biblical truth will be resisted by some. 2 Timothy 4:3
9. Biblical truth rightly handled is approved by God. 2 Tim. 2:15
10. Biblical truth- Continue to grow in it
"Grow in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Pet. 3:18
So it is written. May it now be done! Amen.
