I remember as a child in the late evening just before the sun went down, my little sister Bertie and I would watch the shadows lengthening along the dirt road in front of our house. We would imagine the shadows to be all sorts of things, usually an elongated version of Mom or some other monster.

Shadow or shadows in the Bible are used as something terrifying or in other uses as a reminder of God’s comfort. Shadow of death is used several times and the sting is removed by the promise God to be with us, even in the ultimate, the shadow of death.

It is important when life seems a wee bit too shadowy to know the one who is standing in shadows. A person remarked, “Larry, right now there are just too many shadows in my life. I don’t know if I can keep on living.” Words of despair to be sure, flowing from the heart of an overwhelmed soul.

Ruth Renkel wrote: “Never fear the shadows, they simply mean there’s a light nearby.”

If “shadows” are causing you to fear, Psalm 91 is a grand Psalm of courage with every verse being an affirmation of God’s care for His own. The first verse is a place of refuge under a positive shadow. Psalms 91:1 “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” The entire psalm is worth your time.
