I grew up Elkton, Maryland and thus due to the proximity of his place of raising James A. Michener became one of my all-time favorite authors. No one ever accused him of creating a lite read. He admitted that he did not know who his biological parents were but that he was adopted by a Quaker family and strongly influenced by his adoptive mother.

Mr. Michener wrote an interesting statement about his attitude toward other writers:

“I was brought up in the great tradition of the late Nineteenth Century; that a writer never complains, never explains, and never disdains.”

While not implying that I could have tied Mr. Michener’s shoes, I can aspire to put his idea of a class person into action in my own life. You may not be a writer or a preacher or even a candlestick maker, but the three taboos mentioned are good thing to avoid. His “never disdains” is especially good for men and now women in my calling. Paul warns about disdaining another in Romans 14:10 “But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.” The phrase “set at nought” means to count as nothing, write off. This verse is addressed to the stronger or more accomplished one. Even if we have a long nose we should not use it to look down on others.
