A New Life

New wine calls for new wineskins.

--Mark 2:32


Jerry Harjo and Matt Tiger were co-owners of the “Donut Factory” in Chandler, Oklahoma for nearly 5 years. Just before Thanksgiving, Matt suggested they serve sausage Kolaches as part of their menu.

Jerry began to manufacture a list of excuse for why he did not want to even consider the idea. “It’s too high in cholesterol. It’s a meat item that will cost too much to produce. It might fail.”

“I thought it might work. Oh, well! Never mind. I just thought I’d put this idea to you to see what you think.”

After Jerry spoke his mind, he thought Matt somehow knew he would be negative about introducing a new item to their menu. As Jerry was on his way home, a few words from his minister crossed his mind: “Our lives become stagnant by consent and our ability to be forward thinking.”

“What did I just do? Matt may be on to something. I really never considered his proposal. I was just thinking about failing>”

Jerry called Matt to reconsider his proposal. “How about trying your sausage Kolaches for 90 days to see if it takes. Within two weeks of introducing the new item, so many customers visited and bought the new Kolaches that it sold more than even their most popular donuts. Jerry and Matt’s profits increased five times earning them more than $14,000 per week! They had to hire additional help to keep up with all the orders.

No matter your experience, age or education, before flatly turning down an opportunity, one might ask, “Why not try it?” if one cannot respond, with an honest, well thought out “no”, it might behoove you to give it a try. The opportunity may be well worth your while.


Prayer: Lord, You are not the God of stagnation but of change, renewal, life. Remind me,
Almighty Father, that I am a new creation in You. Encourage me to go forward every
Day of my life. These things I pray. Amen.
