Let me go ahead and jump right in to text on this one, because based on the title of this post, some people’s minds are already looking left when they should be looking right. Have you ever tried a food for the first time, and found yourself spitting it out before it hit the tongue good; especially, something with an acquired taste? Medication has the same effect. You generally take medicine to make yourself feel better, but it’s hard to get over that first dose…that first taste.

In an article written by Lisbeth Booth, I read that, “No matter how careful you are about your oral hygiene, at times, you can get a bad taste in your mouth that just won't go away. Be it the remnants of strong-tasting food, the results of a cold or flu, or a mysterious metallic or bitter taste, an unpleasant taste in your mouth can be at best distracting and at worst sickening.”

Lisbeth Booth goes on to mention various ways of dealing with this problem. She lists several “remedies” to get rid of that unpleasant taste; proper oral hygiene, vitamin C, breath mints, baking soda, salt, proper diet, and if all else fails, a visit to the dentist.

Now, what if the unpleasant taste in your mouth is not food at all…what if it’s God? You don’t want to swallow (be obedient), and you know the only reason why the taste is unpleasant is because you’re fighting it. What do you do?

I am going to share a secret with you right now that will save you a lot of wasted time. Here’s the secret…even if you spit it (Him) out, the taste will still be in your mouth. When God first called me to be a voice for Him and His kingdom, I spit Him out. I did the same thing the second, third, fourth, tenth, one-hundredth times that He called me, but I couldn’t rid myself of Him because the taste was still in my mouth. Once I stopped being a coward, and started being obedient, I realized that it wasn’t an unpleasant taste at all. It was one of those acquired taste…not everyone is going to appreciate it, but if you do, you realize that what’s in your mouth is a priceless, delicacy.

“Oh trust and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him”! Psalm 34:8

Do you remember the story of Jonah for the bible? The Lord came to Jonah saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” The city of Nineveh was in great turmoil because of their idolatrous worship, and God was sending a prophet to deliver a message against them. Well, Jonah wasn’t obedient to God’s demand and went in another direction to flee from Gods’ presence. Long story short, God was displeased with Jonah and sent a great wind on the sea. Jonah ended up in the belly of a great fish. Jonah eventually realized that even if he tried to spit God out, the taste would still be in his mouth. He prayed to God, and God delivered him from the belly of the fish. He went on (after wasting precious time) to accomplish what God had originally placed before him.

The moral of the story is, God is in control of everything. His plan has been written, and we must carry it out. The only thing we’re accomplishing by ignoring Him is wasting time…time that we can’t get back. So, you can either get used to the taste and handle your business…call out to Him and prepare to do His work. Or you can continue to allow the devil the opportunity to try and slap the taste out of your mouth, over and over again; he will never succeed because he’s powerless, but I assure you he’ll beat you down every time.
