In the Bible, we are told there are 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit that are still available to all believers today. And one of those gifts is the gift of tongues.

The gift of tongues is simply the Holy Spirit giving you the supernatural ability to speak in a foreign language that you have no prior knowledge of.

Here is the verse that will tell us what these 9 gifts are, which will include the gift of tongues.

“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” (1 Corinthians 12:7-11)

We are not cessasionists. We do not believe these 9 gifts phased out after the first set of apostles left the scene. As such, every single one of these 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit is still available to all born-again believers today. For related article, see gifts of the holy spirit.

There are two main reasons as to why each believer should want the gift of tongues from the Lord.

1. One, is so you can increase the quality of your prayer life with the Lord. Since the Holy Spirit is the Master Prayer to God the Father, He will always know how to present a perfect prayer to God. By joining in with the Holy Spirit, you will be presenting a perfect prayer go God the Father since you will be operating on the prayer language of the Holy Spirit Himself.

Even though you will not be knowing what you are praying about when you do go into the prayer language of the Holy Spirit, at least you will know that whatever you are praying will be in the perfect will of God, since the prayer will be coming direct from the Holy Spirit Himself.

You can also use your prayer language when you are getting a bit tongue tied with the Lord in how you want to communicate to Him. When that happens, just go into your gift of tongues and the Holy Spirit will then take control and word your prayer the way He will want it to be worded to God the Father.

2. The second main reason you will want this gift is so it can be used for emergency type situations. I have sen testimony after testimony where people were prompted by the Holy Spirit to all of a sudden go into their prayer language for 5-10 minutes.

At the time they did not know what they were praying for. But later on, they end up finding out they were praying for someone who was just about to have a serious accident. And as a result of praying to God in their gift of tongues, God was able to move in the nick of time to prevent the bad accident from occurring.

Since the Holy Spirit is God and Lord Himself, He will be able to see perfectly into the future as to what is going to happen to all of us. And if He sees a bad accident getting ready to occur, then He can prompt someone to go into their prayer language to God the Father so the bad accident can be stopped from actually occurring.

This gift can thus be an actual lifesaver, not only for you, but someone else who may be close to you like one of your good friends or one of your own family members.

For those of who who do not have this gift at this time, just simply go to the Lord in prayer and ask Him to release this gift to you so you can dramatically improve the quality of your prayer life with Him, along with being able to be used by God to save someone from a dire emergency that is getting ready to happen to them.
