Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday October 26, 2011

One of my friends in high places sent a copy of a letter to me the gist of it being the removal of a sign at the Junior/Senior High School which for years boldly proclaimed, "Remember your creator in the days of your youth. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. This is the will of God."

The small community is upset to say the least and T-Shirts are on sale with the saying and several have made replicas of the sign and placed them in the back of their pick-up trucks in protest.

At least someone is saying something about the Nazi like takeover of our life in schools and in exchange we now have lock-downs in Elementary and Junior/Senior High Schools to avoid being shot.

As I thought about the message the sign conveyed to all who enter it became increasingly harder for me to discern whether mention of God or the quaint statement "athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules." is the main problem.

Does anyone really think teens do not know what the asterisk alongside of a player's name means? They cheated and they are crowned. Most recent being three top LSU players suspended for illegal drug use to be reinstated for this coming Saturday's big game. What's this archaic chant about obeying rules in order to be crowned? How juvenile. Any fan or player knows that drugs usually act faster than more development and becoming expert on the essential moves associated with any sport.

Perhaps those who simply had to have the sign removed fear the kids would develop a lifelong guilt complex about this crown and rules conflict.

On the other hand the errant idea that the goal of education via societal institutions is the development of truly autonomous persons, free from alien intrusion; (A vague way of stating there shall be no influence from some other world person or personage, namely, God). is unacceptable to an intelligent populace.

The sign according to the modern paradigm for learning is out of touch with academic reality on at least two points, the necessity of God and the ethic of playing by the rules. Rules are of importance only if there is a god, therefore true knowledge rules out the possibility of such a being thus rules are excised for they have no basis in reality.

I had intended for this piece to be humorous, tragically it is only laughable.

Ecclesiastes 12:1 "Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;"

2 Timothy 2:5 "And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully." How quaint.
