For those who don’t know, outside of my full-time job, I also tutor part-time. I work with individuals from grammar school, up to SAT preparation. On top of that, I work with an adult literacy group helping individuals over the age of 18 pursue his or her personal goals by improving their ability to comprehend, read, write and speak. It’s this adult group that I want to talk about.
“I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.” Isaiah 42:16
Can you imagine going through life, and reaching the age of retirement with a 6th or 7th grade education? That’s what a lot of individuals I tutor are dealing with. What’s good is that most of them have managed to live a very fulfilling life; buying homes, working and supporting their families, and contributing to their communities. But here’s the best part; instead of becoming content and settling within their situation, they are still determined and eager to overcome that huge roadblock in their life; literacy.
I WILL NO LONGER BE A PRISONER OF FEAR…
It is nothing but the grace of God that has inspired these individuals to do what they are doing; to step outside of their comfort zone and seek help through an organization. They are even going a step beyond that…they are putting in the hard work to live the abundant life God has planned for them. In the scripture above taken from Isaiah 42:16, God is telling His children that He is offering His shield of protection to guide us through things seen and unseen. There is nothing for us to fear but fear itself.
It is God’s grace that inspires these adults with literacy issues, and it is that same grace that’s pushing you to be more than what you’re giving yourself credit for. I know how easy it is for fear to set in, and for you to give up and call it quits. But you know what’s easier than that; believing that your life is already planned for you abundantly. Knowing that we serve an almighty God, and trusting in His unmatched power. That’s how we live life with no limits.
