Short Stories
“Just another regular day” were my first thoughts as I opened my squeaky old cupboard looking for something to wear. The grey sky and the painful drizzle outside was the cherry on the icing of my Monday morning blues. The catastrophe of my sober dress sense and my ever-growing derrière struck me like thunderbolt. I had very few fashionable outfits that fit and none was any brighter than off-white.
Like the fan above my head picking up speed came in the thought dispelling all gloom, “SHOPPING.” Thought became an emotion and I found myself breaking into a smile. Grey sky, rain, dirty and potholed roads, Monday morning blues, nothing hampered my mood anymore. Emotion became a decision and I took my only handbag and most important asset, the CREDIT CARD (or should I say liability) and marched out triumphant. The day whizzed on and I was over the moon when my friend told me the town was in sales fever.
With pep in my step I stepped into a super store. I headed straight for the salwar kameez section and discovered that I was too small, too fat (in the wrong places), too poor or just too modest for most of the designers. The western world and its outfits passed the same verdict on me. After searching high and low, three hours later and ankles that had ceased to exist, I found two outfits that I really liked, that were bright, that I fitted into and were wallet friendly. The billing clerk informed me that no exchange would be entertained on these outfits. I didn’t care for the information, as I didn’t find any reason to exchange them. Feeling very proud with my purchases I decided to catch an auto rickshaw back home.
The rain was now pelting down and I could feel my stomach gnawing and growling at me in protest. I agreed to pay a hefty fare to the auto driver, as I had no strength left for a battle of wills with regards to the fare back home. I took an extra thirty minutes to reach home and the auto driver charged me an additional ten rupees due to traffic jams caused by the rain,. My heart sank as I entered the hallway. I saw my mom rushing to me with a package of clothes from the same store saying something about buying me something for my birthday. She opened the packet and showed me the same two outfits that I had bought. My face turned very pale as I remembered the words of the billing clerk, “NO EXCHANGE.” My shopping bug now bugged me completely as I was stuck with two red and black outfits and two royal blue outfits. I felt like a complete fool. I had to live with it as I had unassumingly added too much (rather two much) colour in my life.
