Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday October 6, 2011

Today's offering is an important one so I will let you have a little laugh at first. Enjoy it in preparation for what's to come. P.G. Wodehouse once said of golfer, "The least thing upset him on the links. He missed short putts because of the uproar of the butterflies in the adjoining meadows."

I suppose we all know someone like that and some of my dearest readers may actually be such. We all now folks whom the slightest slight will render them unable to function for days. The huffing and puffing about how unfair is the life we have forced upon us is known throughout the vale of tears. Tears that flow like Vesuvian lava scalding the cheeks so that they appear as the mountainside following an eruption are the norm for this type Ninny.

Most folks don't like to be around such people. Being around them has been said to be similar to holding the fuse to a nuclear bomb between the forefinger and thumb while being tickled by a grim mother in law. I think the saying is accurate though I was never tickled by my mother in law, God rest her soul.

Why are some people like this? There are a number of reasons the number one being they have never "lost it" around the right person. I recall one incident in an old time poolroom losing it and man about 110 pounds heavier and five inches taller, decided to also "lose it" and I will just say that my hair trigger was slowed and considerably so. Such an event is thought to be the best and most long lasting cure.

Other events can lead to calming the maniacal actions of grown men acting like someone reliving the terrible two's one being becoming mature and along the way learning respect, patience and the pretty much futility of blowing your top.

Most pastor's watch in horror as women spend 20, 50 even 70 years in fear and trembling that they might say or do something to set Harry off.

It is a safe bet that if butterflies set a man off while golfing the most innocent of remarks, or the slightest deviation of dinner temperature would do the same. Some men and a few women spend their life, whether in church or Joe's Bar listening for a butterfly so they may have an excuse to act up. Many clergymen have such personages within the congregation and thus walk on eggs while attempting to thunder forth as thus saith the Lord, all the while praying to whatever God's may be that so and so does not get upset.

If by the choice of a mate you are bound to such a person my advice is simple, treat them like the demented dunce they are and pray for grace from Jesus to endure.

Solomon said it like this: Proverbs 16:32 "He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city."
