Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday October 5, 2011

A few weeks ago my seventieth birthday was celebrated by my family and friends; rather exuberantly I might add. I spent the day in mourning. My son gave me a book titled, 1001 Funniest Things Ever Said edited by Steven D. Price. One such saying which I found funny, honest and dangerous was contributed to the literature by none other than Nikita Khrushchev thereby giving the world at least one honest statement by a politician.

"The main difference for the history of the world if I had been shot rather than Kennedy is that Onassis probably wouldn't have married Mrs. Khrushchev."

Anybody have any idea of Old Nik's reception when he went home that night?

Another gem is from a famous curmudgeon on the actions of a sitting president and it is as up to date as later today what with some of the outrageous anti common sense spewing forth from our political and even religious leaders.

"If he became convinced tomorrow that coming out for cannibalism would get him the votes he sorely needs, he would begin fattening a missionary in the White House backyard come Wednesday." H.L. Mencken on Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Hey, it's to laugh.

On the other hand it may be to cry.

Jesus Christ is known to have said a few rather funny things one of which is this famous ticklish phrase in Matthew 23:24 "Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel." As a kid I really laughed at that one for all the kids who lived in Farr Creek knew Camels were for smoking. Gnats were to be swatted, not strained. The statement by Christ is humorous, but oh so true.

On the other hand some of the statements by religious leaders are pathetic such as the recent resignation of a famous, at least in his own mind, pastor in order to have more time to spread his heresy of no hell. I think he is a single man. And then about the same time a truly world famous preacher advised a man whose wife suffers dementia while he plays around with another woman to go ahead and divorce his suffering wife. Knowing this man as uncommonly unreasonable in many of his pronouncements, I was still mildly shocked at this counter biblical advice.

Sunday past I preached a biblical sermon on how we that are strong are to bear the burdens of the weak, to love our spouse when they cannot love back. Later I asked The Great Blonde if she will still love me if I become demented. In her coquettish manner she smiled at me and said "I do." You can imagine the comfort this brought to me.
