LENS LINES -----------A little religion on a positive note By Len Granger
The Family Bible
The family Christian devotions was centered around the family Bible for many generations. During medieval times only the most wealthy families could afford the copied manuscripts. However, after the year 1450 with invention of printing it was possible for families to acquire and to read God's Word. The new acquired family Bible became a place of devotional prayer for family members. A Christian family put their trust and faith in the Lord and the parents were obligated to transmit the faith to their children.
A popular devotion manual published in 1745, recommend family prayer and parental reading of the Scriptures every morning and evening to their children. Since around 1800 all the English versions of the family Bible have included pages dedicated to family history-- births, baptisms, marriages, and deaths. Our family has two King James versions of the Bible with the oldest dated 1834 and another published in 1898. They weigh over twelve pounds each and are printed in fine paper with many drawings of Bible stories. It must have helped draw the family together after a day of hard work living on an Iowa farm , to relax and read God's word.
Family Bibles are a unique source for social and religious history, as Christian families raised their children around the Bible. They learned to pray and share reading the Bible when they grew older, as part of the family unit. However, as the radio took over the families attention and then television replaced the radio, we find today Christian families have moved away from spending time together in God's Word.
The words in this hymn titled, "Family Bible" which was published in 1826 and sung in the country churches of the midwest of our nation, I think you will agree has real meaning of Family Bible Devotion time.
"The Family Bible"
How painfully pleasing the fond recollection.
Of youthful connection and youthful joy,
While blessed with parental advice and affection,
Surrounded with mercy and peace from on high,
I still view the chairs of my father and mother,
The seats of their offspring, as ranged on each hand,
And the richest of books, which excels ev'ry other,
THE FAMILY BIBLE THAT STOOD ON THE STAND.
We pray that our nation will turn back to God and we will worship him and bring our families up in the way of the Lord. Trust we will all be in the church of our choice this Sunday. God Bless America
